Wonderland
Choreographer Margaret Wilson is known for her pioneering work in vertical dance, and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to compose for a few of her shorter works. When she approached me about creating the score to a full-length vertical dance based on Alice In Wonderland, I didn’t hesitate to say yes.
Margaret brought an existential interpretation to the story of Alice. In our conversations, we talked about Alice’s adventure as being a coming-of-age fable, where each of the characters she encounters can give Alice an opportunity to learn something about herself, or provide an obstacle to be overcome. Each bizarre encounter challenges Alice’s sense of self, prompting her to discover who she is on her own terms. This version of Wonderland is a place of growth and development, a place that Alice can fall into as a young girl and emerge from as a Queen.
Wonderland
Music and Lyrics by Sean Stone
Additional Lyrics by Lewis Carroll
The Cheshire Cat Appears (feat. Justen Glover)
The tricky thing about this song for me was figuring out how to make it sound like he was dissolving into smoke.
The Caterpillar (feat. Andrew Thornton, Ressie Lane, and Elizabeth Garbe)
The Caterpillar costume contained three dancers, so the song was written for a trio singing together as a single character.
The Trial
The lyric is pulled directly from Lewis Carrol. This is a simple round, and rounds are always fun to write.
The Red Queen's Lament (feat. Jordan Clark)
The Red Queen is such a dramatic character! To make the music equally dramatic, I asked myself what is the song that Sia would write.
The White Queen's Advice (feat. Marlene Hall)
The white queen experiences time in a non-linear way. Time and tempo get very bendy here. I wanted the voice to sound like it was coming and going at the same time.
Jabberwocky
No Wonderland is complete without the Jabberwocky! (I'm looking at you, Disney.) The fun part was making weird monster sounds and sampling them.
Fight On (feat. Lea Bergman and Caleb O'Brien)
Alice becomes independent - a simple duet.
